Paul HrusovskyArtist Statement "I also love a quiet place The Kingfisher, early 20th century, W.H. Davis Movement, flight, freedom, a swift passage of time. Birds can be a metaphor for things we strive for in life but for some reason just can't seem to capture. We flit from idea to idea and land in the location that is most comfortable to us. There is comfort in retreat and solitude and yet we yearn for a chance to be free. I have been working with the images of birds for some time and it is only recently that I have decided to work with them in depth and develop it into a series. Think of it as an exploration and exercise in style and technique. I started with realistic responses to watching birds in my feeders, progressed to stylistic renderings of birds reminiscent of my previous retro work that is influenced by old readers and text books. At the same time I was paying attention to early naive works and the paintings of the harpies were the results. This journey continues and sketches of more birds continue to fill my sketch books as more feeders are attached to the outside of my studio and the winter birds start to appear. I work with thick applications of acrylic paint Several layers of paint are built up using glazes and thick mediums applied with a palette knife. Some images are silk-screened using stencils I have made and purchased already cut. My intent is to create mystery, interest, and delight.
